The end of the year is almost upon us, and we’ve had so much fun. The Buddy Scheme has been an incredibly diverse membership this year, with everyone from first year students to those undertaking PhDs. As per, we’ve been a global community with engagement from students ranging from Norway to South Korea. We hope that you have enjoyed it too!

Our events so far – and those coming up!

Events have included trips to the Sea Life Centre, to the Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew and on a walk around Central London from the City of Westminster to the City of London. It has been phenomenal. Moreover, we’ve had on campus events, such as free yoga on Fridays and evening forums. We’re thankful that so many turn out for these, and that everyone seems to love the snacks that we supply (including vegan cheese).

We still have some Yoga events coming up and additionally, are offering buddies another opportunity to go to Warner Bros. Studios and experience Harry Potter in all of its glory. We have six tickets left for this, which equates to three pairs of buddies. Why don’t you take the ultimate study break with us? We need your feedback!

The Buddy Scheme is constantly striving to improve for its student community. This is why we need your feedback. Yes, I know, another feedback form but ours do have some success. For example, we changed the Language Café using feedback from students who attend. Additionally, this term, we put on a second event to Kew Gardens and did more food related events because of our events feedback survey! If you’re a new student, fill out this. In turn, if you’re one of our volunteers, fill out this. It is anomynous, so you can be as direct and savage as you wish. Also, you can just tell us how much you love us! Maybe, you could say both. We’ll never know…

Closing soon, and opening again!

The Buddy Scheme closes applications each year. This is so that we can start afresh and ready for the new cohort when the time comes. However, we will be reopening applications on 24th April. If you wish to continue being a volunteer, or perhaps you want to switch to being a volunteer from your current sign up, then do apply. You will need to go through the application process again, and then you will be matched with someone in August or September at the earliest. Along the way, we will provide training and support to you as much as possible, with our Buddy Scheme volunteer conference coming up in the first week of Autumn term and also the opportunity to meet with staff members in person if you need to discuss your role! If you do want to meet with one of us, simply email buddyscheme@sussexstudent.com.

If you want to improve your volunteer experience, sign up to this!

The Buddy Scheme are teaming up with the Wellbeing department at the University to deliver a ‘Look After Your Mate’ session. This is an awesome workshop that helps you develop your skills when supporting your peers. It was created by the charity Student Minds and is certainly relevant to the work that we do.
