Five things to do with your Buddy this Festive Season

Winter is here, and with it cold weather and shorter days – but never fear, the holiday season is soon upon us and there’s plenty of opportunities to have fun with your Buddies. Though we won’t have any more official events until the new term, there’s no reason to stop having a great time and making the most of the holidays, both online and locally.

Film night / Watch party

It’s never been easier to watch something together! Whether you have one Buddy or several, a film night or watch party is a great way to spend a cold evening. Watch parties can be a great alternative to meeting up in person, and you can enjoy each other’s company from the comfort of your own home without braving the cold outdoors. Microwave some popcorn and settle down with a comfy blanket and pick a film to enjoy together.

Burning the Clocks – 21st December, central Brighton

Unfortunately this even has now been cancelled

Every year on the solstice, Brighton is host to a magical parade known as Burning the Clocks. It’s usually in the evening and is a charity event, in which people make lanterns in the shape of stars, or all manner of creatures and objects, to bring down through Brighton to the seafront. Once on the beach they light all the lanterns in a huge bonfire! There’s always music and dancing, and it’s a great event to enjoy in the cold outdoors. Please check the website for Burning the Clocks for more information, and for any Covid-19 restrictions.

Coffee and Christmas Lights

Brighton is a beautiful city, but even more so at this time of year! Have you taken the time to pop into town and have a look at the Christmas lights this year? If not, it’s worth having a look at both the North Laine and the Lanes, as both places are full of delightful coffee shops and cafes, and you can enjoy a hot drink and a slice of cake as a treat whilst enjoying the atmosphere of Christmas in Brighton!

Have a walk in the South Downs

Did you know the Campus is situated right in the heart of the South Downs National Park? Take a stroll into the rolling hills and woods (though maybe bring some waterproof boots at this time of year), and enjoy the views out across the city and the sea. There’s plenty of different routes across the South Downs, and it’s worth exploring – though going with a buddy is a good way to make sure you don’t get lost!

Gaming together

Have you tried online gaming? Are you brand new or a veteran? There’s hundreds of different options and genres around now that there’s something for everyone! Whether it’s online versions of classic board games like Chess, or something a little more action driven and intense like a shooting game, or arena, teaming up to take on your foes, or indeed becoming rivals, is a great option for cold days. Mobile gaming is a great option too, especially if you’re travelling this holiday season.

If you’ve not yet signed up to be part of the Buddy Scheme, it’s not too late. If you put in a form now, you can soon be matched with a new Buddy of your very own! With a new term on it’s way, it’s a great time to Volunteer or sign up to be matched.
