Sussex has so much to offer, so why not make it your new year’s resolution for 2016 to make the most of it. Here are some suggestions from the Buddy Scheme.

Whether you’ve been at Sussex for years or this will be your first week, Refreshers Week will help you make the most of your time at Sussex! More events have been confirmed including Burns Night in Room 76, PhD research presented in exchange for a pint, and East Slope turning into Wall Street for one night only…

Come along to our Refreshers Fair, there will be nearly 200 societies, clubs and groups at the Refreshers Fair to show you all the amazing things students do and that you can be part of.

Bring your buddies to our free Afternoon Tea Party and enjoy a delicious selection of teatime treats with sandwiches, cakes and fruit scones, served with strawberry jam and clotted Devonshire cream. If you have been matched with new Buddies, arrange to meet them at the meeting point at Buddy Scheme Afternoon Tea Party.

Hoping to get more active in 2016? Active US are here to help, offering £1 swimming sessions, Sunday night bouldering, football, table tennis and much more! Try yoga and dance, play traditional sports, go mountain biking and most importantly be a part of our activity and social calendar.There really is something for everyone, of all abilities. Brighton offers plenty to see and do in the city, but don’t miss out on the opportunity to explore the surrounding areas. Rottingdean is particularly nice with an amazing seashore and quaint cottages in the village. Lewes offers an array of cute shops and typically british pubs, did you know that you can even enjoy a beautiful country walk across the Sussex Downs; a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

The Open Market offers fresh nutritious foods and ethical products, the market has a range of traditional market stalls: butcher, fishmonger, eggs, fruit and veg as well as cafes, art, crafts, fashions, antiques, haberdashery, tools, garden goods and more. The Open Market is located on London Road.

Don’t forget to come along to our very own Tuesday Market at Falmer House. Offering everything from local fruit and veg to jewellery and cake!

Language Cafe

Learn a new language

Come to the Language Café to practise speaking and have fun!

We offer 9 different languages for you to learn and practice speaking, including: English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese and Chinese. Whether you are fluent or a beginner, everyone is welcome.

The Language Café is run by student staff and volunteers and takes place every Tuesday from 5.30pm – 7pm in Room 76, starting on Week 1 of the Spring Term (Tuesday 9th February 2016)

Crown Jewels

Enjoy some British culture

See the world-famous Crown Jewels on our Buddy Scheme trip to the Tower of London.

The Tower of London is one of the world’s most famous fortresses and has seen service as a royal palace, prison, armoury and even a zoo.

The Crown Jewels, which are part of the Royal Collection, are displayed to millions of visitors every year, guarded by Yeomen Warders (‘Beefeaters’) in the Tower of London.

Tickets cost: £27.50, which includes a return coach travel and entry to the Tower of London! The Coach will leave Campus at 10am and will leave to come back at 5pm, giving you the full day to explore.

Nominate yourself for a Full-time Officer position.

Full-time Officers are elected every February and lead the Union for a year. There are six positions, each one has responsibility for a different area of Union activity.

Any student can nominate themselves in our elections. We provide training and support to help with elections and once you’re elected.

You don’t have to be ‘the right sort of person’, know everyone on campus, be ‘political’ or have relevant experience. You just need ideas of how to make things better.

Deadline to nominate yourself is Monday 01 February 2016. Find out more

The Students’ Union are looking for a Content Administrator to join our Communications team and help keep students updated on what is going on and how they can be part of it. We’re after someone handy with a camera to take photos and shoot videos as well as someone who can write for our website.

The successful candidate will have a varied and flexible role mixing things like information-gathering to write updates for our website with producing short video clips to an agreed brief.

We welcome applications from mature students, postgraduate students, international students, and students from ethnic minority backgrounds.
